Re: When should we stop feeding blackbirds?

Thanks Alan. I think that's a good strategy. Teach 'em to look elsewhere as well! Nice one. Thanks.

We hate the cold, so every year we try and go somewhere warm in the middle of winter (mind you, coming back is depressing). These pics came from a Voyages Jules Verne trip. While not exclusively a wildlife trip, most days were spent looking for the stuff. We covered a few different habitats and had a...

North East pheasant releases
Chris
I'm new to the website and starting off with an old problem. How many pheasants are released into my local area every year? I'm currently studying with the Open University and looking at the effects pheasant releases have on local ecosystems. I thought this would be difficult, but didn't...

Hi folks, hope you all had a good weekend. I am pleased to report, the female G S W I mentioned a few weeks back, with the injured leg, appears to be using the leg to some extent now. I also observed her flying off with a beak full of pastry. (her preferred nibbles) Perhaps I misjudged her in saying...

Monday's Magic Moment: starling, there's something I need to tell you!
lucinda
I don't know why, but whenever I see a starling I end the encounter with a big grin on my face. Maybe it's because they remind me of a childhood spent listening to their scrabbling around in the loft above my bedroom, attempting to raise a family. Or, maybe it's because of their beautiful...

Helping Collared Doves?
sillygoose
I know this is probably a bit silly... There's a pair of collared doves trying to nest on the arm of my sky dish and they're failing spectacularly. I think they've maybe got one twig to stay in place in the last week and a half. I'm starting to feel for them a little bit and I'm...

Want to get out of the city for a while without driving anywhere? Want to get away from it all for a day? Want to do some birding? If so, get the airport train from Market East, Suburban or 30 th Street Stations to Eastwick and head out of town. When you get off the train, cross the road and walk along...

Bird nesting in metal post box - will they overheat?
sharmck
Hi. Sorry if this isn't in the right place. I'm new and had problems working out how to post. A bird (I think bluetit) has made a beautiful moss nest in our wall mounted black metal letter box but I am worried that they will overheat and that maybe as there are as yet no eggs I should disturb...

You've come from where?

I think (hope?) I'm safe to say that spring is finally here, and as I alluded to last month one thing is for certain - whatever the weather, birds are building nests and pairing up. And while some of those birds have weathered winter with us, some are only now just landing on our shore. And...

Migrants are on their way!
Katie Fuller
'Yeah, yeah,' I hear you say, 'this spring will never arrive.' But it's true that our summer migrant birds are on their way - I've seen them with my own eyes! Just before Easter I was lucky enough to spend a week at the Strait of Gibraltar Bird Observatory , which is run by...

The best view for miles around

Over the Easter weekend I got a chance to talk to the people who man the brand new watch tower - Rossall Point - on Fleetwood promenade. The whole of my life this site has been taken up by an uninspired lump of concrete going through bouts of dereliction, so it was really fantastic to see it knocked...

This was taken when visiting Rutland Water. It was good seeing a few different species at the same time but a shame the coal tit and great tit had flown.

Even though it's been a bit hit-and-miss lately as to whether spring really is on the way, one thing you can definitely be sure of is that birds will be in full nest-building mode in only a matter of weeks. And while most birds hide their beautiful creations under leaves, in nestboxes or tucked...

Are any of these hiding in your garden?

It seems quiet in my garden at the moment. Ok, the birds are still coming to the feeders, but there’s not much else going on. There’s a lull. It seems that my garden wildlife is waiting for winter to slip quietly away. Does that sound like your garden? Well, let me introduce to what’s...

Monday's magic moment: a time for family and friends

For me, Christmas means migrating back to my parents for a few days, where I'll also bump into my sisters and have a gool ol' catch up. I hope that wherever you are, you have a fun and festive couple of days with your friends and family. As my last Monday Moment of 2012, I leave you with...

Monday's magic moment: mesmerizing murmuration

As leaves start their annual colour change, and the morning air fills my lungs with its chilly edge, there is no denying that autumn is on its way. Not that I mind. In fact, I really look forward to the changing seasons and the promise of wildlife spectacles to come. And this great image of starlings...

We're not all early birds, but at this time of year I would seriously suggest that those among us who prefer a few extra hours of duvet-snuggling make an exception. For one thing, the light at this time of day can be absolutely beautiful: But enough of lovely morning shots, because...

The most glorious sight I have ever seen. Immense murmuration of starlings just north of Gretna in Southern Scotland. Amazing. There is also my film on Youtube.... www.youtube.com/heandfi I'm told that the flocks are gathering up there again this year and well worth a visit.

We are lucky to have these guys feed freely in a back yard during the summer months. They quickly learn where the food is; however they take a long time to develop trust of the feeders.
