  • Forum Thread: A Robin has been feeding our Blue Tit Family...

We have been watching for a couple of weeks a Robin that has been feeding our Blue Tit family nesting in our box on the side of the barn. Every evening they have taken it in turns to feed, with all parties very happy with the arrangement and no aggression. Today two chicks fledged (on a cold and wet...
  • Forum Thread: Nesting box question

Evening. Questions, from Switzerland, about 3 nesting boxes. We have three boxes (of 6) which - up until a few days ago - were the subject of much activity (building) from great- and blue tits: 1. Wall mounted box in front courtyard of house (blue tits). 2. Wall mounted box in front courtyard...
  • Forum Thread: Blue Tit chicks

Hi I have just joined this forum, mainly to see if anyone can shed a light on something. We put up a bird box with a camera earlier this year. A blue tit made a beautiful nest in it and laid 8 eggs. They all hatched on the 26th of March. Everything was going brilliantly, they were all feeding really...
  • Forum Thread: blue tits nesting in a stone jar

We have discovered chicken in stone jar with the hole as a consequence being upwards and a drop to the chicken of about 12 inches. The parents are visiting with food but seem to spend more time outside calling. Will the chicken be able to get out when the time is right?
  • Forum Thread: Why no takers for bird box?

Got a bird box on side of house with a camera in it , had loads of interest from blue tits (about 6-10 visits a day) but still no takers after 2 weeks. Its an expensive one made of good timber so I dont understand why none of them want to nest in it. Is it too early?
  • Forum Reply: Re: Blue tit perched on my patio door handle

Hi Grove, and welcome to the forum. I can think of two possible explanations. Firstly, the blue tit might be seeing its own reflection in the glass and thinking that it's a rival. That would be especially true if it was pecking on the glass. You can prevent this by putting a sticker or something...
  • Forum Thread: Blue tits - dead chicks in nesting box

Some blue tits fledged from our nestbox last week. When I cleared and cleaned the nesting box there were two dead chicks in it. Is it unusual for dead chicks to be left? Also, is there any chance of the box being used again this year or can I assume that is that?

  • Forum Thread: Blue tit acting very strangely.

Posting this question in the hope that perhaps someone will have an answer. It is very odd. There is a blue tit acting very strangely in my garden. I've only just noticed him but he appears to have very little fear/sense. Standing next to the feeder, I can stretch my hand out and he will continue...
  • Forum Thread: Fussy birds?

I've recently started feeding birds in my small urban garden. I've put peanuts into a plastic feeder which looks like this one http://shopping.rspb.org.uk/p/BirdFeeders/RSPB_Classic_seed_bird_feeders.htm Blue tits and great tits have been visiting, but.... The Great tits especially discard...
  • Forum Thread: Blue Tits in my flat

Twice this week I have woken up to find a Blue Tit in my living room. I don't really know how they have got in unless there is a gap around a skylight above the landing. I will arrange for someone to check this out. But in the meantime does anyone have any idea why this might be happening now...
  • Forum Thread: Please help - baby bluetits vanished - UPDATE!!!

Hi everyone, I bought my Dad a nestbox with a camera in for Christmas and we've had a great time watching the progress of some nesting bluetits. We got seven eggs and at the weekend three had hatched and Mum and Dad were feeding regularly - was beautiful to watch. However today Mum rang me...
  • Forum Reply: Re: No birds at my feeders.

Thanks for the info. I do have water in a large dish for the birds but they do use the pond for drinking, large birds from the edge and smaller ones from the plant baskets in the pond. The fence has only recently been replaced so will be putting in more shrubs and climbers this year! My neighbour...
  • Forum Thread: blue tit box destroyed by an angry sparrow

We have a nest box with a camera inside, and have been enjoying watching a pair of bluetits build a nest, and lay 9 eggs. She has been sitting for about 8 days, and we had hoped for some hatching early next week. However, during the day today we realised that there was a newly fledged young sparrow...
  • Forum Reply: Re: Great Tits - how many chicks leave the nest?

Well, this is interesting. We have turned on the web cam to find a solitary Blue Tit roosting overnight. How will this resolve itself come early Spring? Will the Great Tits return and oust the Blue Tit or will the Blue tits take over? ...........................watch this space Hi Barny...
  • Forum Reply: Re: Enormously fat male chaffinch

I have an enormous blue tit in the garden (had a thread about the monster but never got any photos). He is a lot bigger than the rest, and a bit of a bully too! He is perfectly healthy (as far as I can tell) and hangs around with the other (normal sized) blue tits. I think we just get some monsters cos...
  • Forum Thread: Molluscs and Blue Tits

Hello! This may seem like a silly question but I'm wondering if anyone could help out? Today we discovered what we assumed were baby slugs about the length of a thumbnail and found a snail trail nearby. Do snails and young slugs begin to appear in Spring? Also, we have two blue tits in the...
  • Forum Thread: Blue Tit behaviour

Wondering if anyone can shed a little light for me. Have a pair of Blue Tits that regularly visit the garden several times a day; They feed for a minute or two then disappear, quite normal, but over the last week they are permanently in my garden chasing each other around, swinging on my trellis and...
  • Forum Thread: nesting blue tits

We live in Hove, East Sussex and during the couple of weeks of snow and ice before Christmas I noticed a blue tit apparently feeding its mate in one of our nest boxes. This carried on over Christmas and I can only assume they had a nest of eggs in there. For the last week to ten days two blue tits are...
  • Forum Reply: Re: Blue Tits Pecking at White House Paint

Hello Steely, I suspect this cheeky little family may well be pecking at tiny insects that they can see or hear in the woodwork. This is not uncommon behaviour for Blue tits this time of year and whilst it might be quite endearing to watch this little birds up close, I can appreciate that despite...
  • Forum Thread: Blue tit nest in our Boiler!

Help - we have a pair of tits nesting in our boiler vent. We have looked in with a torch and can't see a nest, but have seen them flying in and out for a couple of weeks now. • Forum Thread: blue tit nest

At last the blue tits have started laying eggs but she hasnt lined the bottom of the nest and the eggs are just sat on the wooden floor. Will the chicks be warm enough. I've put loads of stuff out for her to use to. Even bought a bag of nesting material but she hasn't used it.
  • Forum Thread: Blue tit planning breakfast in bed

I had a blue tit roosting in my camera nest box. A couple of weeks ago he brought an insect with him. I'm not sure what the insect is - maybe an early cockchafer or a cricket, but it was pretty big (its the thing on the right in my ropy video!). It wasn't there before he came that night and it...
  • Forum Reply: Re: nesting blue tits

Hi all Just a quick update. The blue tits are still feeding their babies. I have put out soaked mealworms as suggested and a fat block with insects in, both of which have been very popular. Most of the food the parents are gathering (and I don't know what this is) is coming from the allotments...
  • Forum Thread: Blue Tits Pecking at White House Paint

Can anyone tell me why our family of blue tits have decided to start pecking away at the white painted woodwork surrounding our windows and doors. They do this until the wood is exposed. Is there anything we can do to stop this? May be they are deficient in something? We want to go on feeding them but...
