I like strutting my stuff and showing off.

But this is especially true during autumn and winter when I go up against other fallow deer bucks for the status of 'top deer', to win mates in what is known as a 'rut'.

Catch us on a frosty morning beneath the trees as we bark and cough, trying to out-do each other, and we reckon you'll not see a more incredible sight.

We aren't the only deer at Cannock Chase, though. You'll also see red deer stags taking each other on, and maybe even hear some roaring, as he who roars loudest wins a date with a hind!

Should you come while we are resting our vocal chords, there are always winter migrant birds about to keep you entertained, including the elusive woodcock, plus gaudy flocks of fieldfare and redwing.

Friendly staff and volunteers will also be on hand to tell you more about our lives, show you our antlers, and generally tell you about the best places on the Chase to see us.

Make sure you don't miss out on this unique chance to be a spectator at our gladiatorial contest.

When can you see us?

Friendly staff and volunteers will be at the deer information point at Birches Valley Cafe Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 10 am-4 pm.

What's at the site?

Birches Valley Forest Centre makes an ideal day out, with extensive mountain bike trails, footpaths and bridleways and a Go Ape centre. Forestry Commission Christmas trees will be on sale from 28 November, when visitors will also be able to meet Father Christmas in his grotto.

Refreshments, toilets and bike hire are available.

How to find us

Birches Valley Forest Centre is in Cannock Forest.

From Rugeley, head towards Penkridge along Hagley Road. The road changes into Penkridge Bank road as it enters Cannock Chase. The Forest Centre is signposted on your left.

From Stafford, head towards Cannock on the A34. Follow the signs for Pye Green or Rugeley. Once on Cannock Chase continue to head for Rugeley until signs for the centre on your right.
