Important notice

The RSPB car park at Marshside will be closed from Monday March 23 to enable repairs to be carried out to the surfacing and fencing. Pedestrian access to Redshank Road (the Old Sand Works Haul Road) will still be possible. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. We hope to re-open the car park by the end of the week and look forward to welcoming visitors to the Visitor Centre once again.

Top things to do in Spring

  1. Look out for displaying lapwings tumbling through the air
  2. See if you can find the hares frantically chasing each other around
  3. Come and see the spring's first avocets

Top things to do in Summer

  1. Look out for common blue butterflies and cinnabar moths along the reserve footpaths
  2. Come and watch the wader chicks - they’ll be congregating around the pools close to the hides
  3. Listen for whitethroats, sedge warblers and reed warblers, all singing enthusiastically

Top things to do in Autumn

  1. Enjoy the arrival of spectacular flocks of black-tailed godwits and noisy pink-footed geese
  2. See if you can spot a merlin, often sitting on a fence post or chasing flocks of skylarks
  3. Marvel at the vast flocks of knots and dunlins feeding out on the mudflats

Top things to do in Winter

  1. Take a walk along the seawall and listen to the whistling flocks of wigeons
  2. Look for hen harriers, peregrines, merlins and short-eared owls hunting over the great carpet of saltmarsh
  3. Walk out along the old sand Haul Road to enjoy the saltmarsh and the wading birds on the mudflats (make sure you know the time of the tides!)
