Tree-planting at Strathbeg, 27.11.11

Tree-planting at Strathbeg, 27.11.11

Six members of the local group joined reserves manager Vicky Anderson and 3 resident RSPB volunteers to plant native trees beside the Tower Pool hide. Undaunted by gale force winds and a few squally showers, we managed to plant and stake about 100 saplings before retiring to Starnafin for a very welcome hot chocolate. We'll enjoy watching the progress of "our" trees over the coming years.

The volunteering season is now over until the Spring.

If you would like to help with practical conservation work next year, please give your name to Mark Sullivan.

RSPB Scotland's online campaigns need you!

Ever wondered if online actions really make a difference? The answer is simple - they do.

Most recently RSPB Scotland's campaign against the proposed new coal-fired power station at Hunterston has contributed more than 2,500 online objections to the Scottish Government, and has played a significant part in raising awareness of the hugely damaging Hunterston proposals which would destroy valuable bird habitat in North Ayrshire. Hunterston is now the most unpopular development proposal in the history of the Scottish planning system, thanks in no small part to objections lodged by RSPB Scotland supporters. We're hoping that this massive public opposition will encourage Scottish Ministers to reject the proposals for new coal at Hunterston.

Last year, our UK colleagues ran a hugely successful campaign to save farmland wildlife from Westminster's public spending cuts. RSPB supporters bombarded the Cabinet with 90,000 emails which, along with a range of other campaign tactics, helped to secure some reprieve from the cuts.

These are just two examples of how the RSPB uses online campaigns. We try to keep online campaign requests to a minimum but there are some campaigns which really do need a mass show of support to let decision makers know that people are watching and demanding action! So, when an email drops into your inbox asking you to sign up to an online action, please do click through and add your support. And if you're not already signed up to receive campaign emails you can do so by sending your details to the email address below.

If you have any questions about RSPB Scotland's campaigns please get in touch with Kelsie Pettit by emailing campaigns.scotland@rspb.org.uk or call her on 0131 317 4172. When we campaign together, we really can make a difference.

RSPB has been working with Stop Climate Chaos to try and influence the Scottish Government's draft budget, which was published recently. We've just launched an urgent and very targeted online action to a few key MSPs, which aims to improve the amount of funding in the budget for measures which tackle climate change. At the moment the budget does not do enough to fund climate change action, and RSPB Scotland is really concerned.
