Portland and Weymouth trip

Little ringed plover wading in shallow water

Saturday, 5 September 2009

Saturday 5 September 2009 - Portland Weymouth trip.
Six members enjoyed two hours sea watching, sheltering from the lively westerly wind on the east side of the obelisk at the end of Portland Bill. Some sun allowed good light and visibility out to sea and gannet, shag, scoter, fulmar and three balearic shearwater were seen. We later followed up the western cliff edge and had good views of wheatear, linnet, greenfinch, whinchat and kestrel on our way up to the old Cresset lighthouse. Then around the top fields and back down to visit the Bird Observatory and quarry on the way back. Then we made our way to Ferrybridge and at the back of the café had good views of dunlin, sandwich terns and ring plover. We finished with a visit to Radipole Lake and a walk to the north hide hoping for bearded tit, but no success.
