Old Steine, tbc. am.
Hove Town Hall, tbc. am.
Southlands Hospital Shops, tbc. am.
Lancing Layby tbc. am

My old stomping ground on January 1st with the IOW local group. Great views out to sea looking for ducks, divers and grebes, whilst the harbour can offer a mixture of ducks, waders and often Black Redstart. Depending on the tide we may venture to a nearby location that has always proved good for birds of prey. Overlooking the RSPB reserve we should be able to see more ducks lurking in the reeds, and hopefully a few surprises.
There are facilities on the Ferry and possibly facilities nearby if they are not locked.
Please wear stout shoes and bring a packed lunch.
BOOKING IS ESSENTIAL, as the coach is often full.

Illustrated talk - "The World of the Wildlife Photographer" by David Boag

Location: All Saints Church Hall, Eaton Road, Hove
Postcode: BN3 3QE (Google map)

David is a full time author and wildlife photographer whose lectures and talks are based on his book titles. He is one of our best known speakers and as a photographer he is often asked:

What are the pictures you are most pleased with?
What is the best place you have visited?
Which subjects do you most enjoy photographing?

How can you possibly compare the Queensland tropical rain forest with the desert of Utah; or compare the delicate but vibrant sunbirds with the power and majesty of a bald eagle? It may be impossible but, in this talk, he is going to try! Working his way through his commissions over a span of 30 years, he brings us right up to date with his latest and most exciting project.

We can expect some stunning photographs and an entertaining evening!

Past talks include "Natural Quarry", The American Project, "Natural Focus", "The Kingfisher", "The Story of the puffin and The Wild coast of Britain and last year's "Safari".

Time: 7.30 pm

Price: £2.00, which includes refreshments

Southlands Hospital shops. 8.00am
Hove town hall. 8.10am
Old Steine. 8.20am
Black lion- Patcham. 8.30am

Quite close to home and a bit of a gamble! If we time this right it could be great for migrants, maybe over the sea or in the small wooded areas. Not far to walk so a leisurely stroll ending up at the cafe at Burling gap. Chances of resident farmland species and Raven and maybe the odd Gannet passing by. If the migrants are on the move there could be warblers, wheatear ad maybe an early swallow.
There should be facilities at Burling gap.

Location: Pick-up times.
Southlands Hospital Shops, 7.30am.
Hove Town Hall, 7.40am.
Old Steine, 7.50am.
Black Lion Patcham 8.00am.
PLEASE NOTE THE EARLIER START TIMES!

This is a double visit.
A first time for this RSPB owned Farm!
We will be shown round this working farm which the RSPB manages for Wildlife whilst at the same time still making a profit with its agricultural practises. With breeding birds up 72% and wintering birds up 364% since the year 2000 this is a great achievement especially as farmland birds in the South East have declined more than any other region. This should be a very interesting and educational trip about our farmland work and one I am really looking forward too.
We should off course also see lots of farmlands birds followed by a short trip to another reserve where we should see Tern,Gadwall and Hobby etc.
Please wear stout shoes and bring a packed lunch.
BOOKING IS ESSENTIAL, as the coach is often full.

Illustrated Talk- "The Wildlife and Ecology of the Exe Estuary and Jurassic Coast" by Rod Lawrence

Location: All Saints Church Hall,
Eaton Road
Hove.

Postcode: BN3 3QE (Google map)

The spectacular Jurassic Coast in Dorset and East Devon is England's first natural World Heritage Site. This unique stretch of coastline has joined the ranks of the Great Barrier Reef and the Grand Canyon as one of the Wonders of the Natural World - and it's right here on the Dorset coast

In addition to its fascinating history and geology Rod will show us the incredible variety of birds, wildlife and plants that can be seen in this unique area.

Rod is a professional naturalist, ecologist, wildlife writer and broadcaster. He is a popular freelance lecturer who has given us 3 excellent talks over the last few years - "The Rainforests of Tropical Australia" and "Namibia the Land of the Living Desert" and "Iceland- Rivers of Ice and Mountains of Fire".

We are delighted to welcome him back. He is an excellent and captivating speaker always bringing the bigger picture of the ecological cycle and his naturalist expertise into his talks, which makes them both fascinating and educational.
