Starling perched on wall

The Starling Spectacle

Although the ABB event only started a few days ago, we have already noticed an increase in the number of starlings coming to the roosts on Brighton Pier and West Pier. On Saturday one of the local peregrines was perched on top of the remains of the West Pier, apparently waiting to pick one off. The starlings did not seem too put out, and dived straight under the girders, leaving one very confused peregrine peering down to see where they were. We can't guarantee this happening too often, but with starling numbers increasing we should enjoy watching their spectacular displays.

Super Starlings

Have you seen the beer advert on TV which features starlings? Well, Brighton has its own spectacle, albeit on a smaller scale. From the 19th October to 18th November, RSPB staff and volunteers will be on the seafront near Brighton Pier with telescopes and binoculars for you to use so that you can witness the sight and sound of thousands of starlings coming in to roost.
