Pair of kittiwakes on rock

Seaford Update

The young kittiwakes have all fledged now, and can be seen circling overhead or forming large rafts on the sea. They look wonderful with the fresh plumage showing black leading edges to the wings, black collar and black terminal band to the tail. Public interest has been so great that the Aren't Birds Brilliant! project is carrying on for another week, until 12th August. By this time, it is expected that many of the birds will have started their long journey out to the Atlantic Ocean, so get along there soon if you want to see them. On a less happy note, it appears that the two fulmar chicks may have died. The last few days have been very hot, and the adults have been away from the nest for several hours at a time. Whether or not they have had difficulty finding food is debatable, as the kittiwakes don't appear to have had any problem.
