Talk -- Swifts and their Conservation - Edward Mayer (Swift Conservation)

Location: United Reformed Church (Verrall Hall), Widmore Road, BROMLEY
Postcode: BR1 1RY (Google map)

Swifts are with us for just three months each summer, bringing spectacular action, drama and excitement to our urban skies.

These amazing birds have shared our buildings ever since the Romans came to Britain. They still breed in our eaves and gables, but not for much longer, as modern and renovated buildings exclude them.

Unless we help them, swifts will vanish from the UK. Find out all about swifts, why they matter, and how you can help them thrive from Edward Mayer's fascinating talk.

Organised by the RSPB Bromley Local Group.

Time: 7.00pm for a 7.15pm start. Ends by 9pm.

Price: £3.50 for RSPB members or £4.50 for non-RSPB members.

COACH TRIP: RSPB Pagham Harbour, Sussex

Location: Meet in Hawthorne Road (the train station end), Bickley. Parking is available on street and at Bickley station.
Postcode: BR1 2HH (Google map)

A coach trip to and guided walk around Pagham Harbour - a peaceful unspoilt haven for wildlife on the Sussex coast. It's a big, sheltered inlet teeming with wildlife and surrounded by beautiful landscapes.

Autumn is an ideal time of year to visit as it sees departing birds such as ring ouzels using the reserve as their final place to refuel before setting off on their epic migration. There's no guessing what might show up!

At the same time as our summer visitors take their exit, thousands of winter visitors will be arriving. The reserve is an internationally important wetland site for ducks, geese and waders, and also supports firecrest, brambling, redwing and fieldfare.

Other birds to keep our eyes peeled for include Dartford warbler, bearded tit, black redstart, spoonbill and great white egret.

Guided walks will be led by Bob Francis and David Hampson (RSPB Bromley Local Group).

Booking is essential. Please email bromleyrspb@gmail.com or call 07392 790 719.

Useful information: The reserve's visitor centre has toilets as well as hot drinks, soup and snacks. There will be places to buy food but you may wish to bring your own packed lunch.
