Grove Ferry

Cuckoo perched in tree

Monday, 19 May 2008

We started our walk at the ramp overlooking the scrape, where we observed several waders including redshank, greenshank, and common sandpiper. A cuckoo landed on a fence post quite close to us, and to confirm its sex the bubbling call was heard when she flew away. The male was heard later in the day. The walk through the wooded area near the car park at Stodmarsh disturbed a hobby that had been sitting in the top of a tree. From the Lampen Wall many swifts were seen and they were flying very low, just missing our heads as they crossed the wall. Hobby and marsh harrier were hunting over the reed beds. The walk back to Grove Ferry alongside the river gave us more views of the aforementioned. Fifty four species were seen in the day.
