Places to see birds

Newport Wetlands

The lagoons at the Newport Wetlands (G.R. ST 837 334) are a good place for waders. Recently there was a semi-palmated sandpiper. Regulars are dunlin, curlew, godwit both bar tailed and black tailed, lapwing, wigeon, knot, little stint and ruff. Also curlew sandpipers, hobby, peregrine and sparrowhawk may be seen.
Avocets have bred again and little egrets are regulars. Visitors have included spoonbill and cattle egret. Nearby are the reedbeds (G.R. ST 371 829) built on the power station fly ash (follow signs for Waterloo Inn!) for reed warblers, reed buntings and short-eared owls. Bearded tits are regularly seen, there have been good views of cuckoo and the elusive cetti's warbler has been seen as well as heard
