Places to see birds

Fingringhoe Wick

Fingringhoe Wick is on the west shore of the Colne Estuary and is one of the best spots in the UK for Nightingales. The reserve was created out of disused gravel workings and has a large range of habitats, including gorse heathland, a lake and mixed plantations of trees. The river frontage provides additional habitats such as mudflats and saltmarsh. Birds that can be seen here in addition to Nightingale include Little Egret, Curlew, Shelduck, Green Woodpecker, Tufted Duck, Brent Goose and Red-breasted Merganser.
There is a visitor centre and hides, open daily (except Mondays), 9am-5pm.
Directions: Follow the brown nature reserve signs from Fingringhoe which is approximately 3 miles from Colchester.
