Places to see birds

Abberton Reservoir

Abberton Reservoir is one of the most important reservoirs in Britain for ducks such as Teal, Gadwell, Tufted Duck, Ruddy Duck, Pochard, Goldeneye, Shoveler and Wigeon. In the summer Common Terns and Yellow Wagtails are present and there is a large colony of tree nesting Cormorants ( an unusual site in Britain). In winter Smew and Goosander can sometimes be seen as well as rarer birds such as Black-necked Grebe, Slavonian Grebe and Red-throated Diver. Many birds on migration stop off at the reservoir and it is also worth keeping a look out around the reservoir for birds such as Golden Plover and Lapwing.
There is a visitor centre and hides, open daily except Monday 9am -5pm.
Location: 3 miles south west of Colchester
