Minibus trip to Harewood House and Fairburn Ings

Sunday, 14 March 2010

Sunday 14th March was a lovely early spring morning when the 13 lucky travellers left Chesterfield on the minibus trip to Harewood House and RSPB Reserve Fairburn Ings.

The good fortune continued with some splendid sightings of red kite at Harewood House with 5 seen at one time flying in close proximity in front of the group.

Having enjoyed their close encounters with red kite the group journeyed on to Fairburn Ings for lunch and a walk around the reserve.

At Fairburn it remained pleasant enough to enjoy a picnic lunch alongside the bird feeding stations where bullfinch, tree sparrows and other small birds were also tucking in to their midday meal.

There where not all that many birds on the main lakes but the group managed to pick out a pair of goldeneye amongst the tufted ducks, shovelers and shelducks.

Later in the afternoon a drive around to the Flash proved more rewarding with good views of the remaining wintering ducks including teal and wigeon and amongst them were around 20 curlews and a lone little egret.

Total number of bird species seen was 44 and a Roe Deer passed close by the group at Harewood House
