Wynyard Park

Male greenfinch perched on rhododendron bush

Sunday, 18 February 2007

Wynyard Country Park (28 species)

Several members having absconded to Skelton in search of waxwings, our numbers were depleted, but eight of us, plus two visitors, gathered at the Thorpe Thewles Visitor centre on a very mild, sunny morning.

Bullfinches provided early views, then we heard a skylark and spotted a male blackcap outside the centre. The bird tables attracted robins, dunnocks, tits and finches, along with yellowhammers and two great spotted woodpeckers.

In the woods goldcrest, long-tailed tits, marsh tits and more great spotted woodpeckers were seen, the latter heard drumming loudly.

A redwing and two song thrushes flitting around branches provided some 'is it/isn't it?' discussion, eventually showing themselves sufficiently to identify properly.

Back at the centre great tits, greenfinches and yellowhammers, looking stunningly colourful in fresh plumage and bright sunshine, entertained us while we sat with coffee, with a couple of obliging tree sparrows providing a finale to a very pleasant morning.
