Sunday Morning Outing: Low Barns Nature Reserve.

Male chaffinch singing on branch

Sunday, 14 January 2007

Despite the cold and strong winds, a dozen hardy souls turned up and braved the elements.
First stop was the feeding station by the visitors' centre. Here we saw marsh tit, nuthatch, blue tit, great tit, coal tit, robin, blackbird, chaffinch, dunnock and fleetingly, great spotted woodpecker.
Leaving the centre, we followed the footpath alongside the River Wear and were rewarded with sightings of grey wagtail and kingfisher.
The flooded gravel pits provided mallard, coot, moorhen, cormorant, goldeneye, tufted duck and mute swan.
Having toured the reserve and seen sparrowhawk and snipe en route, we headed back to the car park where we spotted siskin and redwing among the trees, whilst the hedge below the observation room gave us long-tailed tits in numbers.
General consensus - a worthwhile visit and one to repeat in the future.
