Sunday Morning Outing: Bishop Middleham Quarry

Sunday Morning Outing: Bishop Middleham Quarry

Sunday, 20 July 2008

Weather conditions were favourable and the attractions of Bishop Middleham Quarry drew seventeen of us to spend a pleasant Sunday morning together.
The disused quarry is home to a wide variety of plant life, including orchid species and other wild flowers such as birdsfoot whatsit, hellebore thingy, ladies duvet and many others (I am not a plant expert!) As long as we were careful not to step over the edge of the quarry, there was much to see and learn about.
Butterflies included Ringlet, Meadow Brown, Little Skipper and Common Blue etc. (I take the word of other members. I am not a butterfly expert)
As for birds, there were sand martin, house martin, linnet and yellowhammer about.
So, whatever your preference, something for all - once a parking space has been found, that is.
After a quick snack, a group of us made our way over to Castle Lake, ably guided by Tim, who is a regular visitor to this site. Although there was not a lot to be seen at the time, this is a site that will be worth a visit at some future date - perhaps when a hide is erected later this year.
