Field Trip - Studland National Nature Reserve and Shell Bay

Location: Studland National Nature Reserve and Shell Bay. OS Sheet SZ 195 Grid ref: 035863

Meet at 10.30am in the National Trust Car park by the toll booths on the Swanage side of the Sandbanks Ferry. We will walk along the beach and also visit hides on the reserve looking for late summer visitors and autumn migrants. Level walking but can be muddy.

Field Trip - Radipole and Lodmoor RSPB Reserves

Location: Radipole and Lodmoor RSPB Reserves, Weymouth OS Sheet 194: Grid ref:- 676796

Meet in the Swannery car park, Weymouth at 10.30am by the Radipole RSPB visitor centre. We will walk through the Radipole Reserve in the morning before driving to the other end of Weymouth and visiting Lodmoor in the afternoon. Late summer visitors and autumn migrants will be our target at these popular sites. Suitable for wheelchair users. Please note there is a charge for parking.

A welcome return visit by Andrew Cooper, who is one of Britain's most influential television producers working with the BBC Natural History Unit in Bristol. Although Andrew has travelled extensively in search of wildlife, he believes that we live in one of the most beautiful parts of the world and will illustrate this during his talk. Bristish Owls - Their Natural History and Pratical Conservation

This talk will be presented by Chris Sperring (Conservation Officer for the Hawk and Owl Trust) a well-known naturalist working in the South West. His work involves monitoring wildlife, surveying and habitat creation through advice to landowners including farmers, forestry and conservation bodies. His aim is to make wildlife and conservation accessible to everyone.

Field Trip - Bowling Green Marsh RSPB Reserve

Location: Bowling Green Marsh RSPB Reserve. OS Map 192 Grid ref SX 966 878

Meet at 10.30am in the car park in Holman Way, ( fee charged) the turning to it is beside the level crossing at Topsham Station. We will hope to see a wide range of waders, including Avocet on this circular walk. The hide at the Marsh and most of the walk is accessible to wheelchair users. Parking for disabled users only is available adjacent to the hide. If time permits we will visit a site nearer Exmouth in the afternoon.

Field Trip - Seaton Marshes Local nature Reserve

Location: Seaton Marshes Local nature Reserve OS Map 192 Grid Ref 247901

Meet at 10.30am at the far end of the car park by the Seaton Tramway. (There is a charge) We will then walk along tarmac footpaths to this ever popular reserve, adjacent to the River Axe. If there is time we may also visit another nearby local reserve at Colyford Common. Be prepared for muddy conditions at the latter. Seaton Reserve is fully accessible along the whole route.

Yellowstone and Grand Teton - Birds & Mammals

An illustrated talk presented by Ian Rowlands, a popular speaker with our group. These North American national parks are one of the largest, most wild temperate-zone ecosystems on Earth but with hotels, easy roads and friendly rangers to make it easy! With peaks over 12,000 feet, endless forests, lakes and geysers, the birds include pine grosbeak, great grey owl and Steller's jay, plus it's home to bison, moose, elk, beaver, grizzly and black bear and famously,
re-introduced wolf packs.

Field Trip - Catcott SWT Reserve and other nearby sites.

Meet at 10.30am in the Somerset Wildlife Trust Reserve car park at Catcott. We will hope to see a good range of wildfowl, possibly Bewick Swans and a variety of raptors. Later in the afternoon we will aim to view the spectacular starling roost on one of the other local reserves.

A Natural Quarry

INDOOR MEETING - 'A NATURAL QUARRY' an illustrated talk by David Boag, a regular speaker with our group. David first visited the quarry in the depths of winter and admits that at first it seemed a most unlikely place to find much wildlife.
However, as the year unfolded he was delighted with the wealth of colourful and interesting subjects that surrounded him. The most spectacular birds, including nesting peregrine, ravens, little ringed plover and wheatear, to mention only a few!

Field Trip - Chew Valley Lake

Meet at 10.30am on Heriot's Bridge. Please Note: There will be a charge for a day permit to the hides around the lake. This is a good venue for winter wildfowl, including occasional Smew. This is often a very muddy site so please come prepared.
