The raptor species were few with Buzzard the most common but some people did manage to see a Red Kite which flew over the area. A Tawny Owl was located by a few people and both Green and Great Spotted Woodpecker were seen.
Although Swift, Swallow and House Martin were about their numbers did not appear to be as high as during our previous visits. A single pair of Redstart was seen and, other than Garden Warbler and Chiffchaff, warblers numbers also appeared low. Firecrest was heard by a few people and most of us managed to see Spotted and Pied Flycatcher. Marsh Tit, Coal Tit, Nuthatch and Treecreeper were also seen along with Jay, Raven, Siskin and Lesser Redpoll.
The highlights for everyone were the Pied Flycatcher as one male bird appeared to be oblivious of people in his pursuit of food and also the Siskin which were feeding about 6 inches away from the glass in the hide by the visitor centre.
This was the last trip of the current season. Our new programme comes out in August and bookings for next season will be taken from then. We look forward to seeing both old and new friends over the next twelve months as we visit some new reserves as well as old favourites.
