C.M. had a meeting with the Town Centre Manager and Countryside Ranger for the Town Centre on 2nd May 2008. This was very positive and Salma and Chris went away to look into funding, to allow the planting of reeds, small willows, and other suitable plants around the edge of the lake. This will provide a wider range of wildlife interest for the numerous families, who regularly walk around the lake. Many of the children enjoy feeding the ducks and geese which have colonised the area, and take pleasure in seeing beautiful birds like Great Crested Grebes rearing chicks.
Ther is a small sand bank on the island in which sand martins have nested in previous years. That is still there, and the swallows are back feeding on the copious supply of insects. No swifts seen yet
It was stressed that, even if the water becomes clean enough for leisure activities, wildlife and people can 'live together'.
Updates will be given when appropriate. If you use this area support would be appreciated. Paul Coddington, member for Bessacarr has already given his support verbally.
