Sprotborough Flash. To reach this reserve from Doncaster or elsewhere, go to Junction 36 on the A1(M) (locally known as the Warmsworth Roundabout) and take the A630 towards Rotherham. At the first set of traffic lights turn right towards Sprotborough. Cross the railway bridge (not too obvious) to reach sharp hairpin bends. At the bottom cross the canal and river (quite narrow) and take the first sharp left turn. There is a small car park on your left, which can quickly fill up at busy times. This is part of the River Don Navigation system, administered by British Waterways. Park at Sprotborough Lock and walk west on the Trans-Pennine Trail with the canalised River Don to the left of the path. There are hides overlooking the Flash onto both open water and agricultural land beyond. A good number of water birds are usually seen from the hides along the path. You would be unlucky not to see the wonderful flash of colour from the kingfishers which frequent the area. As well as open water, the area round Sprotborough Flash is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. A number of different orchids may be found in the grassy areas. The woodland offers a superb environment for many species of birds, invertebrates and wildflowers. There is an area where adders may be seen at certain times of the year, basking in the sunshine. The reserve is run by The Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and entrance is free. A good walk along the Trail, rather than going up into the woodland and onto the meadows, continues for approximately 3 miles/5 kilometres and takes you to the Conisbrough Viaduct.
