Places to see birds
Fairburn Ings RSPB Reserve
Situated just off the A1(M) north of Ferrybridge and Fairburn village (with access via the A63 junction and then through Fairburn village). This is an ideal Reserve to see wetland birds at close quarters. There are usually good numbers of wintering wildfowl, breeding waders such as redshank, lapwings and snipe, as well as migratory birds, including black terns. Smews also frequent the Reserve, which has areas of open water, marshland, woodland and grassland. The Reserve is open every day except Christmas Day and Boxing Day. A comfortable Visitor Centre provides facilities and a shop, and there are staff, including volunteers, to help and to chat about the Reserve, much of which was from reclaimed coal workings.
