Places to see birds
Old Moor RSPB Reserve

Situated in the Dearne Valley and well signposted from the A6195. The A6195 connects to the M1 at Junction 36. It also connects with the Barnsley to Doncaster road A635, which links up with the A1(M) at Junction 37. This is a superb reserve for everyone. Dedicated birdwatchers marvel at the flocks of up to 8000 golden plover, numerous wintering wildfowl and waders, as well as a good number of tree sparrows. The furthest hide is only half a mile from the Visitor Centre. Families are well catered for, with a feeding station visited by many garden birds as well as the odd rarity, as well as staff on hand at all times to help, advise and generally welcome visitors. The feeding station can be viewed easily next to the superb Visitor Centre. This contains a well stocked shop, the Gannet Cafe serving hot and cold food, tea and coffee, as well as an exhibition area and toilet facilities. Many events are organised and the Reserve is open every day except Christmas and Boxing Day. (see main RSPB website for further details). These events include pond dipping and mini-beast hunting during the school holidays.
