Mariandyrys is a small North Wales Wildlife Trust reserve overlooking Penmon Point and Puffin Island at the eastern end of Anglesey. The name means "Entangled Bank", which is also the name given to the final paragraph of Darwin's Origin of Species which launched the theory of evolution by natural selection.
Terry Piggott, a NWWT member who has a cottage beside Mariandyrys, talks about the reserve and the wildlife that can be seen on and from it.
The talk is illustrated with his own prize-winning photography.

In recent years Skipwith Common has changed in character as some of the formerly extensive woodland has been cleared. This has allowed improved management of the heath but has also resulted in greater flooding as water levels have risen. A selection of woodland and wetland birds should be seen. After lunch we will move to Melbourne to walk beside the canal in an area which attracts a number of breeding wildfowl and waders. No facilities.

Location: On the cliff, next to the Fog Station, just below Flamborough Lighthouse.
Park near the café in the Lighthouse car park, then walk past the lighthouse down to the Fog Station where we shall be setting up telescopes to look for skuas, shearwaters and other seabirds from 11.00 am until 4.00 pm. This is one of the best sites on the east coast for sea watching. We also like to assist non-birdwatchers to recognise birds. It's a good idea to bring a folding chair if you'd like to stay for some time. We hope you will come along and enjoy the day.

We will begin by walking north along the Point to Chalk Bank and the wader roost hide. In the morning we will follow the public footpath to Haverfield Quarry, an area of scrub and reed filled ponds surrounded by intensive farmland. It provides shelter to a number of wintering birds. After lunch we will drive to the car park at Outstrays Farm and walk along the track to the pumping station at the mouth of the channel where we should get good views of warders and wildfowl being forced to roost by a high tide.
