The season started at John Muir Country Park and Barns Ness in September - 64 species were seen including a good range of waders and sea birds but the star bird had to be lapland bunting.
In October we tried something different with two trips to the east coast, the final destinations being determined on the day! The first trip to Fife produced 68 species and resulted in good numbers of common migrants and surprises. For many the highlight was the ringing session at Fife Ness Muir (thanks to Dr Jim Cobb) where we had close-up views of Pied Flycatcher, Goldcrest, Chiffchaff, Song Thrush and Robin. The probable bird of the day was a solitary corn bunting, a species that has sadly declined throughout most of the UK. The second of our two trips in October saw us visit Holy Isle and Torness Power Station and resulted in 73 species being seen. Whilst Holy Isle was fabulous the birds of the day were to be had at Torness with great views of yellow-browed warbler and Pallas's warbler.
In November we visited Caerlaverock WWT Reserve where we saw 64 species including 14 species of wildfowl - the highlight being green-winged teal.
So far we have seen 109 species in total - a copy of the Group 'tick list' is attached in the file below.
Why not join us on one of our 2011 outings?
