Inner Clyde Mid-week Outing

Wednesday, 11 March 2009
Tuesday 10th March was a beautiful day. Unfortunately, the midweek outing was scheduled for Wednesday the 11th. The Scots word "dreich" sums up the weather that day. However, ten stalwarts turned up at Cardwell Garden Centre in Gourock and, fortified by coffees and scones, ventured out into the wind and rain to see what birds the Inner Clyde had to offer. Not many, it has to be said, but a short walk at Lunderston Bay produced a few of the expected species: eider, red-breasted merganser, shelduck, oystercatcher, redshank, shag, various gulls, raven and distant black guillemot and red-throated diver. Visibility was not good and, when we returned to the cars, it was felt that it was probably best to head for home. Those of us who stopped off at West Ferry on the way back did manage to add goldeneye, pintail and scaup to the list, but all in all it was a very disappointing day.
