Coach trip to Titchwell Marsh RSPB

Coach trip to Titchwell Marsh RSPB

Sunday, 21 September 2008

We had a smashing day at RSPB Titchwell, with wall-to-wall sunshine and some fabulous birds. We had already built up a decent list of birds seen from the coach or during our "comfort stop" at Barton Mills, but a spotted flycatcher and an early skein of pink-footed geese seen from the car park whetted our appetites for more. We were soon watching a juvenile red-necked phalarope doing its customary "Whirling Dervish" act on the Freshmarsh, where Little Stints (at least 10)were soon discovered as well. The more observant (and lucky!) amongst us noted a pectoral sandpiper in amongst the dunlin, whilst common eider, common scoter, red-throated diver, great skua and lots of gannets were seen out at sea. Combined with wonderful weather and lovely beaches this all made for a great day out. When we totted up the bird list on the way home it totalled 99 species, just short of the record of 103 seen on our previous coach trip, to Minsmere in June.

For a full list of the species seen, visit the Royston Wildlife website (www.roystonwildlife.com) and go to the page dedicated to RSPB Local Group activities. Why not come on our future trips? Details can be found in the "Events" section.
