In June RSPB Strumpshaw Fen is an all-round naturalists delight. Couple this with lovely weather and you have a recipe for a terrific day out, and so it proved. Swallowtail butterflies fluttered rapidly across the Meadow Trail and posed for photographers in another meadow just off the reserve. Rare Norfolk hawker and scarce chaser dragonflies were much in evidence on the reserve (11 species of dragonflies were identified in all) and bee and marsh orchids proved popular with the reserve's many visitors. Hardened birdwatchers enjoyed excellent views of marsh harriers, whilst bearded tits and hobbies were seen and a green sandpiper put in a surprise appearance. The huge variety of wildlife seen included grass snake, stoat and Chinese water deer. Even mosquitos put in an appearance, as several otherwise very happy club members were able to testify on the journey home! As always, a full bird list can be accessed via the RSPB Local Group page on the web site: www.roystonwildlife.com.
