We started 2012 with a January coach trip to two reserves; RSPB Fen Drayton and WWT Welney. Wildfowl highlights of the morning visit to Fen Drayton were goosander, pintail and lots of goldeneye. At least three marsh harriers passed over the reserve and some people were lucky enough to see a "ringtail" harrier: possibly the putative hen harrier x pallid harrier hybrid that had been seen locally. Welney was, as we had hoped and expected, full of swans and we were able to enjoy watching the 3.30 pm swan feed. White-fronted and pink-footed geese were in amongst the numerous greylags and canada geese and the resident barn owl put on a fine display for us. Forty four contented travellers returned down the A10 with some happy memories. For the full bird list (75 species), visit the RSPB Local Group page on the Royston Wildlife web site (www.roystonwildlife.com).
