Summer Bird News

Although the hot summer weather has been good for Swallows, Swifts & Martins, wader migration has been affected locally, with only a few Common Sandpipers, Little Ringed Plover, Dunlin, Snipe, Greenshank and Turnstone on reservoirs. The muddy areas at Blithfield are baked dry, reducing the feeding potential for waders.

The highlight locally has been the Quail calling in the evenings at Whitemoor Haye (SK 173133), a good sign of breeding success.

If you're taking a holiday over the summer, enjoy the birds in a different area, and look out for the departure of Hirundines on their migratory journeys. The Lichfield & District Group holds its next meeting on Tuesday 12th September. Hope to see you there!
