New Reserve for the Midlands
Lichfield & District Group are delighted that the first new RSPB reserve in the Midlands for 10 years is going to be on our doorstep at Middleton Lakes. The 400 acre old quarry site, off the A4091 just south of Tamworth, will be restored to provide lakes, pools, reedbeds, meadows and woodlands between the River Tame and the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal. The purchase was made possible by funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Natural England, SITA Trust and Staffordshire County Council.
The reserve will open in three years' time, but £500,000 is still needed to make Middleton Lakes a haven for birds, wildlife and people. Donations can be sent to Jo Smith, RSPB Midlands Region, 46 The Green, South Bar, Banbury, Oxfordshire OX16 9AB.
