On a very cold misty and bleak February day it was difficult to want to go for a walk, but needing the exercise it was an essential event. February is the most unloved month and walking along the river edge over frozen snow it was obvious why. Nothing seemed to be enjoying the day, redwing and fieldfare were nervously flying from bush to bush, trying to find any lingering hawthorn berries, robin and dunnock searched under the hedges for suicidal spiders; all seemed to be waiting for better times. More...

Which migrants have you still to see? I still have not seen a spotted flycatcher or redstart even though I made the trip to RSPB Coombes Valley in Derbyshire. As a woodland reserve this must be one of the best and it is local, only taking an hour of relaxed driving. The reserve is close to Ashbourne on the Leek road and is well worth a visit at this time of year. The pied flycatchers put on a great display and redstarts are there, it's just that I did not see them! More...
