Places to see birds

Bramingham Wood.

Bramingham Wood, on the northern extremity of Luton (OS TL 068258) can be accessed from Whitehorse Vale or from it's southern end at Newbold Road.

Bus services from the town centre pass by both entrances to the wood (Arriva 24 or 25). Car parking is available in the nearby Sainburys store or at a smaller car park adjacent. Sainsburys has toilets and a cafe and in the smaller car park there is a pub and a fish and chip shop but it's the woods where you'll find the birds!

The wood is comprised of mature trees with an understorey of hazel and hawthorn and despite it's location 130 plant species have been recorded including a new British species of fungi in 1986. Bluebells appear during spring.

Over fifty species of birds have been recorded including Nuthatch, Treecreeper, Blackcap and Chiffchaff. Sparrowhawk and Tawny owl reside. Butterflies can be seen on sunny days, Speckled wood, Peacock, Small tortoiseshell and Holly blue have been recorded. There is also a supporting cast of common mammals.

Why not spend an hour or so exploring the woods before or after visiting the local store or even while your partner does the 'weekly shop'?
