It was a muddier, boggier walk than this time last year but the rain held off so we could enjoy a full morning out birding. Seventeen of us roamed through the woods, across fields, and next to small waterways in the search for winter birds.
Yellow birds seemed the order of the day - we saw goldcrest, goldfinch, a good sized flock of siskins and many yellowhammers.
Amongst the other notable birds we spotted were a mistle thrush, greater spotted and green woodpeckers, fieldfare, a kestrel, redwing and a small flock of lesser redpoll. Some were fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of a kingfisher as it streaked along the stream. Mammals included a muntjac deer and a shrew desperately trying to hide from us as we peered at it through the foliage.
This was a satisfying walk to coax us into the Christmas spirit.
