Trip to Wintersett Reservoir on 7th January 2007

Male goldeneye

Thursday, 18 January 2007

39 of our members went on the group's first visit to this reserve. It is now run by the National Trust and is situated in an area close to Nostell Priory. The four bodies of water held a good variety of waterfowl. The duck species included Wigeon, Teal, Mallard, Shoveler, Pochard, Tufted Duck and Ruddy Duck. Goosander and Goldeneye were seen in good numbers, together with waders such as Lapwing, Curlew and Snipe. The bird feeding station was well worth a visit, if only to see Tree Sparrows in abundance. The Finch family was well represented by Chaffinch, Greenfinch, Goldfinch, Bullfinch, Siskin and Redpoll. I would like to say a few words about the Squires Tea Rooms. I am positive that they had a role to play in our enjoyment of that wonderful area. I was thanked by Terry Davey, the proprietor, for the custom of the Mansfield RSPB Members Group.
