MANSFIELD GROUP'S TRIP TO WINTERSETT RESERVOIR ON 7th JUNE 2009

Little ringed plover wading in shallow water

Wednesday, 17 June 2009

This turned out to be one of our best days with 50 species recorded. Too many to list individually, but they included tree sparrow, blackcap, garden warbler, kingfisher, bullfinch, yellowhammer, reed & sedge warblers and a little ringed plover.

Wintersett Reservoir, situated between Wakefield and Barnsley, was created to supply water to the Barnsley Canal, which is no longer in use and is partly filled in. It is a wonderful habitat for wildlife and the Reservoir is now attracting wintering wildfowl.
