Field Trip to Tatton and Rostherne Mere

Twenty seven members turned out for our first field trip of 2006. This was a very pleasing start. As we walked to the mere at Tatton a very confiding Song Thrush came quite close to us and then it began to sing to welcome us. On the mere we saw Goldeneye, Tufted Duck, pochard and Mallard. Also present were Black-headed Gulls, Cormorants, Canada Geese, a single Common Gull and a pair of Herons back at their nest and tidying it up. We saw no sign of the red-headed Smew but some of the Group did manage to see a pair of Madarin Duck. From here we moved onto Rosthern Mere where lunch was taken.
It was very nice in the warm hide and as we looked over the mere small flocks of Teal and Wigeon were observed. Nearby about half a dozen Shoveler were busy feeding. We then went for a short walk around the reserve where we heard two Water Rail calling but alas we could not see them. On the bird table Nuthatch, Great and Blue Tit were busy picking at what food remained. In total 49 species were seen and everyone said that they had enjoyed the day.
