Trip to Blacktoft Sands and Old Moor Reserves
At Blacktoft Sands we had really close sightings of a pair of Bearded Tits, a speciality of this reserve. Along with these there was a good selection of waders including some birds which were on passage, such as half a dozen Curlew Sandpipers and two Little Stints. Also seen were over 200 Lapwings, a few Redshanks, several Golden Plover and fifty plus Black-tailed Godwits. The main highlight was watching a pair of Marsh Harriers hunting and as they reached the estuary several thousand waders were flushed. Seeing these birds swirl around like clouds was incredible.
After lunch we moved onto Old Moor. On the scrapes were two small flocks of Linnets searching for seeds. A small mixed flock of Pochard and Gadwall was a nice find. Seen at close range from one of the hides was a huge flock of Golden Plover, over 750 in total. As the sun shone on their plumage they looked truly golden. However a Peregrine flew over and the whole flock took off as one, seeking safety in the sky.
