Frodsham Area

Frodsham Marsh

This is an area of deposit beds owned by the Manchester Ship Canal Company. Many of the older beds have reverted to farm land, while the most recent contain standing water. The Marsh, together with the adjacent bend on the River Weaver has, over many years, accumulated a long list of rarities, especially waders and raptors. There is no access to the land, but many of the beds are viewable from the surrounding tracks. To get there, take Marsh Lane, which leaves Frodham's main street at its western end. A bird log is usually to be found on the side of the track at SJ509783. If taking a car onto the site, please avoid causing an obstruction.

Delamere Forest Park

About 5 miles south of Frodsham lies a large wooded area, once part of the vast Delamere Forest. Managed by Forest Enterprise and Cheshire County Council, there are miles of paths to explore with car parks and picnic areas at strategic points. Some parts of the natural deciduous forest still exist, while a large area has been planted with conifers. One part of the forest (Blakemere) has been allowed to revert to its former character as a wetland area by clearing the trees, attracting ducks, gulls and other water birds. Most of our woodland birds may be found, including small numbers of crossbills, while raptors include buzzard and sparrowhawk. Redstarts and pied flycatchers have been known to breed. The Forest Park visitor centre is at Linmere (near Delamere Station), and can be contacted at 01606 882167. The County Council Countryside Management unit is also at Linmere, telephone 01606 889941.
