Field Trip to North Wales Coast

male stonechat perched on bramble

Saturday, 8 March 2008

When we arrived at Llanfairfechan the tide was fully in due in part to the strength of the wind. It was so choppy we were unable to see the birds, if there had been any. One Red-throated Diver, 4 Red-breasted Mergansers and a dozen Oystercatchers made up the total for nearly one hour's birdwatching.
Then following the river inland we found a pair of Dippers building a nest under the A55, also present was a Grey Wagtail.
From here we drove to Aber Ogwen and visited The Spinnies Reserve. Highlights were Little Egrets, Greenshank, Redshank and a good number of woodland species.
After lunch we decided to go to Llanrwst where a Hoopoe had been seen. However on the way there the rain came down and when we reached the site the weather was so bad we went to find a coffee shop instead.
Several members of the Group then went to visit RSPB Conwy whilst others made their way home. A small group went to a site where Short-eared Owls had been seen. Luckily for them, 2 Owls were quartering the rough ground and as a bonus a male Stonechat was also added to the list.
In total 19 members saw 44 species of bird.
