The first stop was at the feeding station where Great Spotted Woodpecker, Nuthatch and several Tree Sparrow were seen, a pair of Brambling were also noted later in the day. The group visited several hides overlooking the reserve pools, a good variety of duck were present including Shelduck, Wigeon, Gadwall, Goldeneye and five Goosander. A water Rail was also heard calling from the reeds and a Kingfisher was also seen. A large flock of Pink-footed Geese was noted feeding on adjacent farmland along with a few Red-legged Partridge and Corn Bunting, whilst a Little Owl was gave good views as it perched in a tree hole before moving off to feed.
The afternoon was spent at Martin Mere Wildfowl and Wetland trust reserve, here the group visited the various hides which overlook the various pools and farmland. The main mere was frequented by a good variety of wildfowl including Whooper Swan, Pink-footed Goose, Pintail and Pochard, waders present included Ringed Plover, Dunlin, Ruff and Black-tailed Godwit. Whilst Buzzard, Marsh Harrier and Merlin were amongst the raptors which hunted the nearby farmland.
A very good day with over 70 species seen.
