A New Local Group has Hatched!

The north east corner of London has been without an RSPB Local Group for the best part of 15 years, ever since the Epping Forest Local Group closed. Until now that is, a new group known as the North East London RSPB Local Group has formed and launched on the 18th November at Oakdale Junior School in South Woodford.

An initial event was run in February 2008 by the RSPB London Office to measure local interest in having a new group in the area. The response was huge, so huge a second event had to be run in April to cater for the large numbers! Those who attended were treated to a fascinating talk by Nick Baker and given the chance to find out more about the work being done in London by the RSPB.

Since then a Committee of volunteers has been formed and planning has been underway to get the group off to a flying start. With so many important sites for birds and wildlife in the group's area including Epping Forest, the Lee Valley, Hainault Forest and Roding Valley there will be lots of opportunity to get involved with local conservation issues and chances to encourage local people to use the green spaces on their doorstep more often.

The first three events for 2009 have been booked, more detailed information on these activities can be found on our events page. By March 2009 we hope to have a full programme of events in place, if you would like to be added to our mailing list and kept up to date with the groups activities please contact us at nelondonrspb@yahoo.co.uk
