March Trip to Rainham Marshes

March Trip to Rainham Marshes

Super Day. Super organisation, Super turn out. Bit Windy!

The RSPB Reserve was extremely accessible due to the work on new paths which had taken place over the Winter. We were guided by two of the Reserve leaders, Howard Vaughan and Sam Shippey. What they didn't know about birds wasn't worth writing on a postage stamp.

We spotted 23 varieties of duck, wader and gulls, the highlight being a ruff (reeve actually). And 20 passerines and one kestrel. The leaders knew exactly where skylarks were nesting and we saw two sing whilst ascending (rendering Vaughan Williams redundant).

At the conclusion of the walk, a sign indicated the presence of water vole, whereupon one obliging swam past us. Finally the Visitor Centre welcomed us with warmth and their famous home-made cakes.

You must come on our next visit!
