Cuckoo perched in tree

Dawn Chorus Walk in Hainault Forest Country Park
(This was organised by LB of Redbridge's Nature Conservation Rangers)

Well worth rising at 3.30am ahead of the birds!

Meeting at 4.45am, the forest was swathed in mist, but the sun broke through quickly.

The leaders were Tajinder Lachhar from the North East London RSPB (and a Ranger!) and Roy Woodward from the East London Birders Forum, both of whom were able to answer all questions from the beginners and the knowledgeable.

Apart from the hundred or so rabbits, there were 7 spots for wading birds and waterfowl, including a grey heron, motionless and, therefore, almost camouflaged. And 23 passerines, including a cuckoo, a pair of great spotted woodpeckers leading their new fledglings on a forage, and, the highlight of the morning, two whitethroats displaying.

A close second in highlights was definitely the splendid breakfast at the conclusion of the walk which had been prepared by the volunteers.
