Birdwatching Trip to Spurn Point

Sunday, 23 September 2007

Thirty-one members of the Group visited Spurn Point Nature Reserve on Humberside on Sunday 23rd September 2007. We were hoping for brisk east winds and whilst the day was windy it was coming from the wrong direction. Nevertheless there were a number of interesting species seen. Whilst one experienced birder saw five lifers on the day, the average tick list for the day was not much above 30; rather disappointing. Given this, the accumulated total of 87 was an excellent return. The species count was considerably increased by the excellent sea-watching opportunities at Spurn. The highlight was the BLUETHROAT, a first year bird. Excellent views were possible. The bird skittered around among rocks and exposed bare patches of earth, seemingly unconcerned about the crowd of birders a few feet away. Despite the relatively low individual tick numbers the members enjoyed the day.
