Birdwatching Trip to RSPB Blacktoft Sands

Sunday, 16 March 2008
Thirty-four members of the Group visited RSPB Blacktoft Sands on Humberside on Sunday 16th March 2008. The weather did not live up to its poor billing; whilst it was windy it was also mild and dry. We had excellent views of several marsh harriers some of which were displaying. The number of avocets on the reserve a few days prior to our visit was three; we counted 81. The hides at Blacktoft face north so the birds are in good light and the wheeling avocets looked like a giant chequerboard pattern of black and white. A glorious spectacle. It was also a delight to have good views of a water vole just going about its business in the channel in front of the information centre. A rare sight.
