Birdwatching Trip to Weeting Heath and Lakenheath Fen

Sunday, 8 June 2008
The visit to Weeting Heath and Lakenheath Fen, a first for the Group, promised to be a highlight of the year and we were not disappointed. Forty-three of us set off in fine sunshine and this was with us throughout the day. Everyone had fine views of the stone curlews and a little owl at Weeting Heath and a few were fortunate in watching a wood lark sitting for minutes on a post not much more than ten metres away. A spotted flycatcher nest in a nestbox just outside the West hide gave superb views as the adults returned repeatedly to feed the chicks. Lakenheath offered much and lived up to its reputation. Whilst only one of our Group was patient and lucky enough to see a golden oriole most of us heard the unmistakeable fluting call. We made up for this by having sightings of cranes, marsh harriers, hobbys, bearded tits and a honey buzzard. A splendid day and well worth the long journey.
