Birdwatching Trip to Tophill Low

Sunday, 24 January 2010
Nearly thirty intrepid members of the Group visited Tophill Low near Beverley on Sunday 24th January 2010. Given the recent weather it was with some trepidation that we set out. However, we had a pleasant mild day, much better than we had expected. The fortunate spotters saw the bittern, most of us saw the female smew but were disappointed by there being no drakes around. There were lots of wildfowl including a whooper swan, a few gadwall in their grey understated beauty and several goldeneye of both sexes. As dusk fell the gull roost became impressive but we could be excused for not picking out the yellow-legged gull among the hundreds. Sixty-nine species were seen.
