Raptophilia

Male merlin perched on mossy hummock, Shetland Isles

Tuesday, 6 February 2007

Keith Offord came to convince us that raptors are special - and probably succeeded. First he had to define what a raptor is, which proved no simple task when you consider that many foreign birds don't easily fit the bill (a hooked one?). Then we explored the role of raptors in nature - the good guys that clear up the carrion and the bad ones that raid gardens.

Finally, Keith told us about conservation and his work in north Wales where, with the support of farmers and gamekeepers, the future for raptors and their prey seems to be improving all the time.
